Outside experts condemn Mexico's inquiry into 43 missing students

Outside experts investigating the September 2014 attacks on 43 teacher trainees delivered a devastating final report on Sunday, finding inconsistencies, errors and omissions in the government’s official investigation, along with evidence of suspects being tortured The five-member expert team from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) also accused the federal government of failing to fully cooperate with their investigation and of allowing a smear campaign to assail their work, in an attempt to discredit the final report and harass them out of the country. Absent from the presentation were the Mexican public officials responsible for human rights, whose chairs remained empty through the two-hour reading of the report. It was another a sign of the strained relations between the Mexican government and IACHR, which in recent months encountered a spate of unflattering stories in publications sympathetic to the president and his party. The group even ...

Ohio town shocked by killing of family members as manhunt continues b

Residents of the rural southern   Ohio   community of Piketon are rattled by a rare major crime that took the lives of eight members of a tight-knit family known in the area as hard workers. Authorities were still trying Sunday to find out who   targeted the seven adults and teenage boy   and why. Their bodies were found Friday at four different homes near Piketon, about 60 miles south of Columbus. Kayla Hay said she got to know one of the victims, 37-year-old Dana Rhoden, when they both worked as nurse’s aides at a nursing home. Hay said she was shocked and saddened when she heard Rhoden was among those killed. “I’ve never heard her say anything about being frightened or concerned about anything bad happening,” said Hay, who described Rhoden as outgoing and friendly. “She was always in a good mood and was very bright, both in her personality and her intelligence,” Hay said. All of the victims were members of the Rhoden family. The others were...

Healthy in his habits, tireless at work and an energetic creator who friends said avoided alcohol and drugs. Prince’s death has left investigators piecing together his final hours and mourners grappling with how the musician’s life could have come to such a sudden end. On Saturday   Prince   was cremated and a group of his “most beloved” family, friends and musicians celebrated him afterwards in a small, private service, his publicist said on Saturday. Yvette Noel-Schure said in a statement that the 57-year-old music superstar’s family and friends gathered “in a private, beautiful ceremony” to say a loving goodbye. The statement did not say where the service was held, but friends such as percussionist Sheila E and bassist Larry Graham were both seen on Saturday entering Prince’s suburban Minneapolis estate, Paisley Park. World heading for catastrophe over natural disasters, risk expert warns

The world’s failure to prepare for natural disasters will have “inconceivably bad” consequences as climate change fuels a huge increase in catastrophic droughts and floods and the humanitarian crises that follow, the UN’s head of disaster planning has warned. Last year, earthquakes, floods, heatwaves and landslides left   22,773 people dead, affected 98.6 million others and caused $66.5bn (£47bn) of economic damage(pdf). Yet the international community spends less than half of one per cent of the global aid budget on   mitigating the risks posed by such hazards.

Rwanda: a country not deterred by its horrendous past | TZ

Tanzania President John Pombe Magufuli enjoys a light moment with his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame Rwanda: a country not deterred by its horrendous past | TZ Rwanda has just concluded the Genocide Week, in commemoration of the almost one million Rwandans who lost their lives in the macabre genocide of 1994. For those who know and understand the situation in Rwanda at the time, a lot has changed in the last 22 years since the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) came to power. Naturally, there are voices of dissent against the type of governance President Paul Kagame exercises, a healthy development in its own right, but these voices should not cloud the achievements made so far, under not-so-friendly circumstances. It is imperative to note that the country charted a path of where it wants to be and how it intends to get there. Not many governments in Africa pursue such dreams with the nostalgia Rwanda does. For instance, corruption, one of the biggest impedim...
